Online Mediation

I am a first-time poster who worked approximately 10 years as a mediator for a 'Not for profit' organisation in Australia, before returning to NZ shortly before Covid 19 caused such upheaval in the FDR process.  I have no experience with Online Mediation, am keen to develop skills in this area and would be very interested in any insights or advice members are willing to provide.  I am planning to attend the Webinar with Michael Lang (March 17) and want to work towards being in a position to get the most out of that experience.
    Cheers

    Hey Susan,
I am in the same boat, had 10 years with a major organisation before commencing my own practise for a couple of years working out of my office.  I no longer have the office now and purely operate on line, I guess it is the way of the future.  I do not have a great deal of experience to share with you regards to online but the little I have found is,  that  the FDR process does not change,  however a good basic understanding of the IT is going to be your best friend.  (for me its Zoom)   The principals of FDR are the same, you control the process and the clients still supply the content.

I try to take on board all I can absorb especially from the younger generations, its their world now and as from this year I will be on the road doing the grey nomad thing so I will have to work more fully with the IT available so I guess I will have to get better.

    Hope this helps,

    Best regards
    Bob Tilbrooke.

    Hi Susan,

There are a number of free webinars in the back catalogue that we have run in the earlier days of COVID and lock down that you may find helpful in this area (that talk to the various technology platforms available as well as the skills etc that are required in an online environment). There is also a certification in ODR that we run, however that is much more comprehensive and skills focused, and a more significant investment.

Our staff will happily share the resources that we do have available though if that's of interest.

    Warm regards,
    Amber

That would be brilliant Amber.......I will readily admit that technology and I are not a natural fit so I would appreciate access to any resources that will point me in the right direction.  I will certainly not be offended by very basic instructions on how to get there - in my old position it was common practice to use me as the guinea pig in testing out instructions before they were more widely diseminated e.g step 1 - turn on the power.........

I will concentrate on any freebies at the moment (as so far it has been all outgoings and no income) but I am sure that the work is out there so it's just a matter of me 'upskilling' to be in the position to seize the opportunities when they arise.

    Cheers

    Hi Susan

Here's a link to the series of webinars Amber mentions, you'll find three in here, one on Zoom, one on MODRON, one on Teams. All of these include general tips about ODR as well, all free and worth a watch. Just register for them and an email will come out with a link to video.

    Hi Laura

I opened the link you sent and went to complete the Registrations but must be doing something wrong again as the first gave a date way in the future and the second is not free unless you first pay $195 for professional development, otherwise it is $25 for members to register.  I haven't checked the 3rd yet

    Hi Susan and All
Here's links again to the specific webinars mentioned (all free) - Susan I'm sharing this again because last time I mistakenly sent it just to you and not the group. As stated, please ignore the dates in the webinar recording events as these are indicating how long the webinar recording will be online rather than a date the event will run. Please just use these links and follow through the registration process, you will not be charged, and the video link will come in the confirmation.

Webinar recording | What MODRON can offer: the value it can add for dispute resolution professionals

    Hi Susan and all.
I will be interested to see the webinars for online training. I am a Counsellor and have always found it difficult to properly engage clients for an hr or so in meaningful dialogue  online.I suspect it is unfamiliar territory and challenging technology as well as the format and body language/rapport aspects of communication. Plus the fact that I am not good at the technology but happy to learn as I think this will increasingly be the new platform for Counselling and Mediation.
Where/ how do I find these Webinars via Resolution Institute?
Do people find it is better for client and Mediator to conduct online sessions? And what about Shuttle Mediation ? How does that work online ?

    happy to discuss
    phil

Hi Philip and Susan, I've been working as a coach almost exclusively online for 5 years. I'm also involved in group events and online seminars at a massive scale - I think I've learnt a thing or two! Please feel free to reach out, I'm happy to have a virtual coffee and answer questions / share some insights and/or come up with solutions. Best wishes, Natalie

    Dear Natalie,

Thank you for sharing and also reaching out to members sharing your experience, it is very much appreciated. Through Member Connect one of the benefits of this platform is as members participate and engage the Resolution Institute is able to spot trends and areas of interest and we can then connect members together and also to build the required resources to support as well. As I build this bank of key areas and topics, I am also looking for members who have experience in this area and in due course run some spotlight programs or a live Question and Answer session hosted here on Member Connect. I look forward to members that are interested on this or any other topics to reach out to me.

Thankyou so much to everyone who responded to my original post - if I subsequently made comments and/or re-asked questions that had already been covered it was due to my practice of responding to the oldest of my emails first rather than going straight to the top!

I would just like to say what a positive experience this has been for me - I was quite nervous about posting and am now feeling supported, uplifted and wouldn't hesitate to recommend any other 'virgin posters' to give it a go!

This issue is very important. My experience where there is family violence before the Magistrates Court and one side is not represented or there is an obstructive lawyer, the Magistrate will refer the matter to a FDRP to try to reach a reasonable solution. This then goes back to the Magistrate later in the session to make an order on the position of the children. This requires the drafting of the order while other matters are before the Court and giving it a sense of its urgency. I have kept this concise as there are many issues to do with police and other departments which one could write about for long time, but my experience as I have expressed above should capture the essence.

Thank you very much for your contribution. It is quite enlightening and has helped throw more light on the dynamics of family mediation and how family violence can be resolved before the magistrate court.
