Thanks David for your interesting post. I'll seek out the works you mentioned. Like you, I'm drawn to musical references to illustrate aspects of the mediation process. I find many parallels in the structure of a symphony. A stunning example of emotional intelligence in the form of restraint and perfect timing can be found in Symphony No 3 in C Minor by Camille Saint-Saëns. Although it's known as the Organ Symphony, the organ is scarcely heard until 28 minutes into the 36 minute work. When it finally arrives, it does so with a crashing sustained C Major chord which heralds a dramatic shift and brings the entire orchestra in behind it for the final movement. To me, that magnificent chord represents a critical turning point in mediation, the moment when parties let go of the painful past and turn their full attention to opportunities ahead. Like Saint-Saëns, the emotionally intelligent mediator recognises the significance of that 'key change' and has the restraint and wisdom to hold off until the time is just right.

If a mediator is to be a conductor (see original article from PULSE, attached, "The Mediator as a Conductor which sets the theme), then the mediator, cunningly disguised as a conductor, has to be a repertoire of techniques, akin to symphonies and musical works by composers. I plan to use five different musical pieces to illustrate this concept, which will be published over successive issues of Pulse.
Articles in the series
- The narrative symphony
- The neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) Ride of the Vaslkyries
- The Transactional Analysis (TA) trio divertimento for violin, cello and viola
- The compassionate …….????
5. The Emotional Intelligence ....????
1. The narrative symphony My favourite narrative symphony is Stephen Oliver's The Hobbit,
commissioned by the BBC for its dramatisation of Tolkien's masterpiece.
- Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
This article involves our five sensory mechanisms and their effect on thinking, behaviour and communicating and how mediators can use this technique.. The most evocative musical piece encompassing all the senses for me has been the clip from Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now wherein the flock of helicoptors, full of rockets, machime guns and soldiers wielding automatic rifles "dance" to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" as they destroy a Vietnamese village and its inhabitants
- Transactional Analysis (TA)
TA opens up a mediator's mind (and the minds of anyone who is interested in
this technique) to the "Games People Play". It incorporates concepts in threes like Parent, Adult, Child ; Victim, Rescuer, Persecutor ; and, of course, Games people play. I have chosen Mozart's trio divertimento for violin, cello and viola a beautiful piece, with the 3 instruments reminding me of the Father bear, Mother bear and Baby bear family and their interconnectedness.
The first two articles have been done but the TA, Emotional Intelligence and Compassionate articles are not yet written.
A Challenge:
Can anyone come up with a classical piece or even symphony that can represent/reflect/evoke each of the next 3 titles: TA , Emotional Intelligence and Compassion.
Winning selections will win a copy of my book of poems, "Conversations with the Heart-Mind"
